Cleaning without toxic chemicals

Despite there being the most extensive range of chemical cleaning products on the market than ever before, it seems that many people are going back to basics and turning to simple eucalyptus or tea tree oil blends to keep their homes clean.

This surge in popularity of traditional natural cleaning products has seen some manufacturers start to look at ways that they can minimise the amount of potentially harmful chemicals in their goods.

The IGA supermarket chain has just announced that all laundry and dishwasher products sold under their private labels Black & Gold and IGA Signature are now phosphate-free.

"We are delighted to be taking the lead in the supermarket industry to make Australian home laundries and kitchens phosphate-free," sustainability manager at Metcash - IGA's supplier - Louise Rhodes said in a statement.

"It is just another step we are taking to make the IGA network of close to 1,400 supermarkets across Australia the most environmentally friendly of any in Australia."

This decision was in part propelled forward by John Dee, the founder of the DoSomething charity organisation. Mr Dee has been calling on supermarkets to remove phosphate from these products for a while, and congratulated IGA and Metcash on this achievement.

"IGA and its supplier Metcash take the sustainability of products seriously and after hard work with its suppliers, have achieved a result that leads the other supermarket chains," Mr Dee said.
